Is the GE Profile Opal 2.0 Ultra Nugget Ice Maker with Side Tank worth it?
Only if you love nugget ice and can live with the noise.
It makes the soft, chewable nugget ice people love, its app is excellent and it fits a counter more easily than the Govee. The Ultra adds a filter that slows scale build-up. It's slow, at around a pound of ice an hour, it needs a cleaning cycle every week and descaling every month, and it hums like a loud fridge while it runs. Some owners report grinding noises or units that stopped making ice within months.

How we reached this verdict
Reviewed named the Opal 2.0 its best ice maker overall for crisp ice, quiet running and an excellent app, though it makes only about a pound an hour. Food Network picked it as its splurge and found it heavy and bulky. Popular Mechanics, after six months with the Ultra, found the first batch came in about ten minutes but that it hums like a loud fridge and needs regular cleaning and descaling.
We compared independent expert reviews with the manufacturer's specifications, then checked it's sold at a major retailer where you live. We don't test products ourselves.
