Dyson V15 Detect: questions before you buy

Yes — if you want the best clean.
The strongest all-rounder: a laser shows dust on hard floors and a sensor counts what it picks up.

How long does the battery last?
Up to 60 minutes on the lowest power with a non-motorised tool, per Dyson — TechRadar got 59 minutes. On Boost it's closer to 9 minutes in Trusted Reviews' test. The battery clicks out, so a spare doubles your time.
How long does it take to charge?
About 4.5 hours from empty.
Does the laser work on carpet?
No. The green laser on the Fluffy head lights up dust on hard floors only. On carpet you rely on the suction and the dust sensor.
How heavy is it?
About 6.8 lb. Reviewers find it heavy in handheld mode, for stairs or high-up cleaning.
Do I have to hold the trigger the whole time?
Yes. It only runs while you squeeze the trigger, and there's no lock to keep it on.
How big is the bin, and does it empty itself?
The bin holds about 0.2 gallons and you empty it by hand — there's no self-emptying dock. If that matters, the Shark PowerDetect Speed Clean & Empty empties itself.
Is it good on carpet?
Yes — it's one of the strongest cordless vacuums. Dyson rates it at 240 air watts on Boost, and in Auto mode it turns suction up when its sensor detects more dust.
Is it good for allergies?
Dyson says the whole machine is sealed to HEPA standard, capturing 99.99% of particles down to 0.3 microns, so dust doesn't leak back out.
How loud is it?
Loud on Boost: TechRadar measured 81 dB, Trusted Reviews 72 dB. Lower settings are quieter.
Should I get the V15 or the Shark PowerDetect?
The V15 for the deepest clean, especially on carpet, and the laser on hard floors. The Shark if you want it to empty itself and to spend less.
