Nespresso Vertuo Pop: questions before you buy

Yes — for convenience on a budget.
Cheap, tiny and no mess. Pods cost more over time.

Which pods does it take?
Only Nespresso Vertuo pods. The machine reads a barcode on each pod to set the cup size, so Nespresso Original pods and third-party capsules won't work.
What cup sizes can it make?
The Vertuo Pop+ makes six cup sizes, from a 25 ml ristretto up to an XL of about 355 ml (12 oz). It picks the size from the pod.
Will my mug fit under it?
Check your mug first. Cup clearance is the most common complaint about the Vertuo Pop range — on the smaller Vertuo Pop it's about 8 cm (3 in) with the drip tray in.
How big is the water tank?
The Pop+ has a 1.1 L (37 oz) tank, about twice the size of the original Vertuo Pop's.
Does it froth milk?
No. For lattes and cappuccinos you need a separate milk frother such as Nespresso's Aeroccino, often sold in a bundle with the machine.
How quickly does it make a coffee?
It heats up in about 30 seconds, and TechRadar found a mug of coffee took about 30 seconds to brew. It switches itself off after 2 minutes.
How many used pods does it hold?
The used-pod container takes about 8 espresso pods or 5 mug pods before you empty it.
Is it noisy?
A little: TechRadar measured 62–71 dB while it brews, as the pod spins.
Are pods more expensive than beans?
Yes, per cup. The machine is cheap, but pods cost more than fresh beans and only Nespresso sells Vertuo pods. Our coffee cost calculator shows when a bean machine pays for itself.
Should I get this or a bean-to-cup machine?
Get the Vertuo Pop if you want the cheapest, smallest, no-mess way to good coffee. Get a bean-to-cup like the De'Longhi Magnifica Evo if you drink several coffees a day and want cheaper cups over time.
