Is the TCL 27R94 worth it?

Yes β€” superb HDR for the money.

It measured over 1,700 nits, brighter than any OLED, and its 2,304 dimming zones keep blacks very deep, so HDR games and films look stunning. Colour covers all of DCI-P3, 4K at 27 inches is very sharp, and at 165Hz with low input lag and Adaptive-Sync it's excellent for gaming. It has two HDMI 2.1 ports for consoles, USB-C, a USB hub, speakers and LED lighting. Out of the box the greyscale isn't perfectly even.

Good to know

  • Some greyscale errors out of the box.
  • Like any Mini LED, bright objects can show a faint halo on black.

How we reached this verdict

Tom's Hardware calls it one of the brightest monitors you can buy and a class leader: it measured over 1,700 nits, with very low black levels from 2,304 zones, saturated colour, high pixel density, smooth video processing, low input lag and excellent value. Its only listed flaw is some greyscale anomalies.

We compared independent expert reviews with the manufacturer's specifications, then checked it's sold at a major retailer where you live. We don't test products ourselves.
