Is the LG G5 OLED 55-inch worth it?

Yes โ€” the best-value flagship OLED while it's discounted.

It's very bright for an OLED, with deep blacks, four HDMI 2.1 ports up to 165Hz and superb gaming support. The G6 that replaced it is brighter and sounds fuller, but reviewers find the G5's colours and skin tones more natural and its blacks deeper, and it now sells well below the G6. The built-in sound is thin, so plan on a soundbar.

What owners say

Owners love the picture, and many say it's the best TV they've had. Complaints are rare: a few faults, and the menus and remote.

Good to know

  • The built-in speakers sound thin; a soundbar helps.
  • No HDR10+ support.
  • Some colour banding in Filmmaker Mode, and colours shift slightly from off to the side.
  • In the UK the wall-mount version (OLED55G54LW) has no feet; the OLED55G56LS comes with a stand.

How we reached this verdict

Expert Reviews calls it a real leap for LG OLED: stunningly bright, colourful pictures (about 2,300 nits on small HDR highlights in Filmmaker Mode), 12.9 ms input lag and outstanding gaming support, with minor banding and off-axis colour shift. What Hi-Fi makes it the better buy than the G6: the newer set is brighter and sounds better, but the G5's colours are more natural and consistent, and it costs far less now.

We compared independent expert reviews with the manufacturer's specifications, then checked it's sold at a major retailer where you live. We don't test products ourselves.
