Is the Garmin Forerunner 970 worth it?

Yes — the best watch for serious runners.

It has Garmin's brightest screen, accurate dual-band GPS, colour maps with turn-by-turn directions and a built-in flashlight, and lasts up to about 15 days as a smartwatch. Its training advice is the most detailed of any watch here, from recovery and readiness to how much running your body can take, with a triathlon coach too. It works with iPhone and Android. It's chunky and one of the dearest running watches, and some running metrics need Garmin's chest strap.

Good to know

  • Chunky on smaller wrists.
  • Expensive.
  • Some running-economy metrics need Garmin's chest strap.
  • Smartwatch apps are basic next to an Apple Watch.

How we reached this verdict

TechRadar (4.5/5, after nine months of use) calls it an outstanding running watch for its training tools, maps and flashlight, but chunky and expensive. Trusted Reviews also gives it 4.5/5. T3 (4/5) likes the brighter screen, flashlight and sapphire lens, but notes some features need the HRM 600 strap.

We compared independent expert reviews with the manufacturer's specifications, then checked it's sold at a major retailer where you live. We don't test products ourselves.
